5. Pottery. "Cuerda Seca"
The origin of the "Cuerda-Seca" (Dry rope) technique goes back to medieval times when the great cities of Southern Spain, such as, Cordoba or Seville, were the main centers of Western art and culture. In this environment expert master ceramist combined two noble materials, gold and enamel, to create extraordinary works of art today appreciated all over the world. The "Cuerda-Seca" (dry rope) process is begun with the "Bizcochado" (bisqué), or molding of the clay, wich is then dried and finally baked. Once this piece acquieres its shape, expert craftsmen proceed with the meticulous decoration of the smallest detaus with enamel. Following this hand-decoration the piece undergoes a second backing with which it reaches its characteristic consistency and brilliant coloring. After appliying 24 carat gold with a brush, the fin al backing, or "Tercer Fuego" (third firing) takes places witch which the definitive finish is obtained.
